Attack On Titan

Havent had much to blog about lately due to time constraints (How? Im fucking unemployed now?!) so I thought I'd go ahead and tell you all once more that you all really need to watch Attack on Titan before more details of the plot leak out.

We're up to episode 5 now and 3/5 of those episodes have had me saying 'what the fuuuuuuccckkkkk' louder than the last occasion. I have literally been recommending this show to everyone I know, but it's even more important now because such crazy shit has occurred that if you don't start watching soon, certain plot points might get spoiled for you.
I recommended the show to one friend of mine who, upon watching episode 5, ended up reading ahead in the manga - "it gets crazy" he says. Shit was already crazy so I can't even imagine.

The emotions, art-style, soundtrack, animation quality and scale of this show is far above the average show, and this is so far possibly the best anime I have ever watched.

Little Witch Academia (OVA)

Little Witch Academia is a surprise joy from new studio 'Trigger', a bunch of ex-gainax folk lead by the same director as Panty and Stocking and Gurren Lagann.
Its a 26 minute standalone OVA set in an imaginative fantasy world full of (as you may have guessed) witches and magic, the short story follows Akko and friends through her time at the academy in a plot which feels oh so very Harry Potter. Being only 26 minutes, the OVA does a fantastic job of condensing essentially a whole movie into just the bare minimum - friendships are made, rivalries are formed, and the whole thing even gets a solid end to fit its flashy opening sequence.

Give this a try, the youtube version has English subtitles embedded, and is available up to 1080p (and it really looks lovely in HD).

Ookami Kodomo: Ame to Yuki // Wolf Children (2012)

Director Mamoru Hosoda seems to be on a hot streak after The girl who leapt through time, Summer Wars (the best Japanese animated film of all time imo) and now Wolf Children.
The film is 2 hours long and takes the viewer for an emotion fueled trip through the life of mother Hana, who falls in love with a wolf and subsequently has to raise two.
Wolf Children is filled with joy and tragedy similar to life itself, and has a very lovable cast of main characters - which is just as well as the film would likely drag on if not for the rollercoaster stylized plot.
The animation is top notch as you would expect from a film of this scale, scenery is beautiful and detailed whilst characters are kept fairly simplistic and yet detailed where it matters (facial expressions and so on).
Segments of the film become almost an orchestral music video, with the film becoming almost a backup act for the music.
I can't really say too much more without spoiling stuff, but it is definitely worth a watch, this is a film that will make you laugh, hold your breath, and maybe cry. Watch it (Commie sub link)

Shingeki no Kyojin
(Attack on Titan)

Looking like anime of the season if it keeps this pace up.
Mankind faces extinction from the titans, who are equal parts creepy as shit, and fucking badass (like this guy above). This show looks set to bring some strong character development along with some fantastic action scenes. Give episode 1 a try and see how you feel.
Oh, it also has the best opening this season

Suisei no Gargantia
(Gargantia on the verdurous planet)



I've yet to really enjoy a mecha anime, but this seems pretty ready to convert me. Visually stunning and with lots of lasers if you are into that sort of thing.

Hataraku Maou-sama!
(The devil is a Part-timer!)

Demon lord ends up on earth... working part time at a fast food joint.
Is a comedy for now, though something tells me it might mingle amongst other genre's later on, the comedy is pretty solid however.

Hentai ouji to warawanai neko
(The perverted prince and the stony cat)

A fun, if slightly juvenile comedy with its fair share of flat chest jokes, the female main character is moe to the fucking max. This show gets a recommendation almost purely for its adorable female lead, but the MC is quirky and pretty original as well (for the type of show that it is).

Sequel Tier:

Ore no imouto Ga Konna ni kawaii wake ga nai 2
(My little sister can't be this cute 2)

A second season if 'My little sister can't be this much of a bitch', Kirino maintains her 7 tablespoons 'tsun' to 1 teaspoon 'dere'. For fans only tbh as this seems to be leaning weaker than the first season.

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S
(A certain scientific Railgun S)

I enjoyed the first season of Railgun despite not watching the related 'A certain magical index', season 2 seems to have grown up a little since its last appearance, and I'm thankful for it.

Meh Tier:

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W (Nyaruko-san 2)
A disappointment, I rated the first season a 7, but this s2 is off to a very bad start.
edit. 3 episodes in and i've dropped it. Fucking awful.

Yahari ore no seishun love come wa machigatteiru (My teen romantic comedy SNAFU)
Holds both a terrible title, and terrible content. Unlikable main characters and generally unentertaining premise have made me drop this one.


There are loads of other shows I didn't even bother checking the first episode of due to bad reviews, low ratings and so on. The most promising ones of those I havent seen look like 'Aku no Hana', 'Devil Survivor 2' and maybe 'Date a live' I guess? You'll have to get someone else's opinion for those though.

Mind Game (2004)

Mind Game is without a doubt, the most bizarre Anime/Film I've ever seen. Trying to explain the plot is as pointless as trying to understand what is happening in the film, so I'll spare you guys that.

What I will say however, is that Mind Game is a truly amazing film, full of emotion and clever little spins/twists that will make you think that maybe the people creating it had any sort of idea what they were actually producing.
The artstyle in this film really sets it apart from.... anything else ever created, the film seems to dislike sticking to a set artstyle for more than 30 seconds at a time, scenes range from 'my first drawing' to animated photorealism and everything in-between  some scenes look like they were drawn sober, whilst some were drawn on a film cell still half covered in cocaine - but its a good thing, somehow.

I will add, that people looking for a proper plot, or even people looking for a conclusive story might not appreciate this film. Though I suppose it does have its own philosophical ending in its own way but it certainly isn't the cut and dry ending that most people would prefer.

I think the random dance party was my favourite scene in the whole film

New Shows:

Maoyuu

Its almost like watching an anime based around playing Civilization V, the jist of the plot is a hero goes to kill the demon lord - who then convinces the hero that the war effort is necessary for the economy of the country because the kingdom is currently united against the demons. They then go about trying to fix the economy by travelling and helping towns/villages with their problems (food shortage, etc)
Its a weird show, and it has its own binges of rom-com mixed in occasionally, but on the whole it seems a decent enough watch.

Tamako Market

Tamako Market is this seasons Kyoani release (studio behind K-ON and last seasons Chuunibyou), it shows through its moeblob animation style, gentle pacing, and its 'nothing ever actually happens in this show' plot. Regardless however, its a comedy involving cute girls doing cute things - accompanied by an obese talking bird. Its entertaining enough to warrant a look.

Kotoura San

Im pretty on the fence with Kotoura-San, it had a pretty strong opening episode but as we're going into episode 3 im not quite sure how I feel about it.
Kotoura is a girl who effortlessly reads minds, interestingly however the show has gone in the direction of portraying it as a curse rather than a gift, focusing on the hardships of being outcast for not being normal. The show tries to balance it out with some cheap comedy and what looks like the beginning of a love story but its anyone's guess how I'll feel about this show come episode 10.
For now however, its probably worth keeping an eye on (and hell, i've got to blog something.)

If you liked the first season, you'll probably like this. If you haven't seen the first season, and want a non serious love polygon comedy with quirky characters (a goth loli, a nun, a pervert scientist, a bimbo who plays eroge, a cross-dresser and a bully) then check out season 1

Upgraded from last WYSBW Tier:

Sakurasou

I didn't have particularly strong feelings for this one after 2 episodes when I did my last WYSBW, but after getting to know the characters better (and watching them know their characters better) I can say that Sakurasou is one of the better shows currently airing, and was one of the better shows last season as well. Its a plot driven love polygon comedy, and I cant help but feel half the fun comes from rooting for your favourite character in the polygon. #TeamAoyama
It was revealed it was a 2-cour, so this will be airing until the end of the season at least probably.

Mediocre Tier:

Oreshura
aka. Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru / My girlfriend and childhood friend fight too much

Yeah, with a title like that...
Not sure how I feel about this one yet, seems pretty mediocre, but its such a dismal season for anime i'll probably end up watching it anyway.
A hot girl forms a fake relationship to prevent other guys from hitting on her, and then the childhood friend gets involved...

Top 10 of 2012 : Anime

#10 - Sword Art Online
Just barely beating out the honourable mentions is SAO, which had an incredible first few episodes and generally good first arc, but then the second arc started to become a little bit shit, and the ending was admittedly pretty bad. However the first arc was strong enough to carry the rest of it into my top 10. Had it kept going at the first arc for the whole 25 episodes this would probably rank much higher.


#9 - Lupin 3rd : The Woman Called Fujiko Mine
Highly stylized self contained episodes worked in this show's favour, and reminded me how badly we need more shows like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. This is a great standalone watch even for those completely unfamiliar with the Lupin 3rd series.


#8 - Psycho Pass
One of the more serious shows on this list, Psycho-pass is an interesting gritty take on the sci-fi police detective genre. Still only half way through the season as its a 2-cour but it has convinced me enough in 11 episodes to make it onto my top 10 of the year.


#7 - Sakurasou
Guilty pleasure of the year, with a formula and story which seems unoriginal and almost out of a newgrounds dating sim, this show somehow still manages to tick enough boxes to be a very entertaining 13 episode watch.


#6 - Chuunibyou demo koi ga shitai
Emotional rollercoaster, from straight comedy to romantic comedy, to romantic drama, to drama and all the way back. A good watch all the way, and very moeeee~


#5 - Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou

Schoolboy sketch show comedy, hit and miss jokes, but the hits can pack some serious punch (also, literary girl is the best background character this year)


#4 - Yuru Yuri 2

Still holds the award for most entertaining 'pointless schoolgirls doing fuckall' shows.

#3 - Binbougami Ga!


Fantastic comedy all the way through, brainless as fuck and with lots of needless fanservice, but i'll be damned if that ever stopped me from enjoying a show. Very lovable characters who get some good development as the show goes on.


#2 - Waiting in the summer

Lighthearted romantic comedy featuring an alien, with some not so lighthearted extra relationship drama thrown in. A few bumps here and there, but a great watch overall.

#1 - Kids on the slope

An amazing drama from start to finish, Friendships and relationships are formed and crushed, and the climax half way through features one of the best moments in anime.


Honourable Mentions: Another, Kokoro Connect, Tonari No Kaibutsu, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Phantom Blood, Spaces Brothers (which has been consistently good all the way through, but runs at a slower pace than the others)

What you should be watching this season (Autumn 2012)

New Shows:

Psycho Pass

A future world where law enforcers can arrest/kill individuals based on their likelihood of committing a crime in the future, and the law enforcers are criminals themselves. Im enjoying this one mostly for the universe it has been set in, where you can change outfits at the press of a button, and your future can be dictated to you by the system. Its a slow moving action sci-fi with great art. Also gore if you get shot in the arm by one of those enforcer guns...

Tonari no Kaibutsu Kun (My little monster)

This is my personal favourite of the season by a landslide.
Romantic comedy with a very lovable cast of characters. not really much else to say here, Romantic comedies are pretty standard in their method but this one is well executed. Also an amazing Ska intro.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

Follows the first series of manga (the phantom blood arc), Its fucking Jojo vs Dio at its best, the art style is pretty cool in that it goes all manga style every now and then. The anime thankfully skips most of the boring stuff in the manga and condenses it mostly into the first episode, bare this in mind if you start watching in that the first episode is pretty boring but necessary to establish Dio as a complete asshole. I've read this arc in the manga and the action is going to keep ramping up until people are setting their hands the fuck on fire and punching through people.

Robotics;Notes

Another season, another school club. This time the robotics club in their attempt to build GUNVARREL, a giant robot, to enter into a competition. Seems pretty slow starting for now but is very watchable. This is also from the same writers as Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate, both of which contain some ridiculous twists as the series goes on, its been revealed in episode 2 of robo;notes that the main girl suffers from a syndrome where occasionally 5 minutes will pass by in a second for her - so something tells me shit is going to get crazy later on.

Suki-tte ii na yo (Say I love you)

A Romantic drama, which seems to be progressing pretty damn fast with confessions flying by 2nd episode, which is a nice change of pace for anyone who watches these sort of series (for comparison in Kimi ni todoke I think it took a 26 episode season). Its a decent watch so far, although the central male in this seems like kind of a rapist. This one is mostly a serious show, so if you want something more lighthearted watch Tonari no kaibutsu (above) instead.

Chuunibyou demo koi ga shitai
Regardless of my adolescent delusions, I want a date!

Moeblob of the season, from the studio that made K-on I believe. A comedy which reminds me a little of haruhi, with a straight man and a girl who is obviously high as hell. A fun watch if you can stomach the moeeeee~
Also, she has an eyepatch, because people are into that apparently.

Sequels:

Hidamari Sketch Honeycomb (S4)
Season 4 of hidamari apartments, if you've watched any of the previous seasons  you know what to expect, if you havent, and want a very chill slice of life comedy, check out the previous 3 seasons first.
When I started watching from S1 I finished all 3 seasons in 3 months (that is to say, it was good enough for me to come back for more)

Bakuman S3
Its Baku again. Still good. This is the one that was originally based on a manga about making manga.


'Okay' Tier:

Zetsuen No Tempest 
Semi-generic battle style anime, watch magical talismans. Guy trying to avenge his dead sister. Its okay. I'm probably going to stop watching this after watching episode 3 this morning.

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou
Comedy about.... Honestly I've watched 2 episodes and i dont have a clue what im watching. Its not bad, but its not very memorable either

Shin Sekai yori (from the new world)
From a future world where people have esper like abilities, bad students get murdered? Or something? Its okay. I've stopped watching though.


Hot Garbage Tier:

Onii-chan dakedo ai sae areba kankei nai yo ne!
Anything with onii-chan in the name is generally trash, this reaffirms.

Hayate no gotoku: Cant take my eyes off you
A reboot of a series which used to be good. Watch the original instead of this crap.

Btoom!
Guy gets sucked into a desert island which is also a call of duty 4 server, that is to say, everyone its battle royale and everyone has grenades.

What you should be watching this season (Summer 2012 Anime roundup )

I realise this post comes a little late as we're just over half way through the season, but its at this point where you can say for sure you are enjoying a series - in that, if you don't actively want to continue watching it, it probably wasn't any good to begin with...

New Shows:

Binbougami Ga!

About a girl full of luck, and a god of misfortune trying to steal it from her. The show obviously doesnt quite play out like that though, and quickly just turns into a character driven comedy - which probably works out for the better as the characters are all pretty entertaining (a bitch, a god, a masochist dog, a pervert priest, and more as the show goes on).
The show (as can be seen in the picture) is also full of references to other shows, which is usually amazing.

Sword Art Online

aka. Gamers dream.
New MMO comes out, you jack into it matrix style, then the developer turns out to be peter molyneux and he has disabled the quit button. Everyone is trapped in the game, you die in the game, you die in the real world. The only way out is to beat the game.
The anime follows kirito, the black swordsman, who, like your typical tryhard gamer - solo's through the game and becomes overleveled and powerful as fuck. Its a great watch.

Other good shows:

Space brothers - Which you should still be watching from last season.

Yuru Yuri 2 - Sequel, more of the same, if you enjoy schoolgirl comedy you should check out the first season and then watch this as well. Its one of the funnier ones imo.

Almost worth watching tier:

Humanity has declined - bit too boring, confusing and nonsensical

Kokoro Connect - Very watchable, but I'm not sure if id recommend it.

The ambition of Oda Nobuna - Again, very watchable, but not really good enough to recommend. I think a lot of people would find it boring.

Not even worth hyperlinking tier:

Tari Tari, Total Eclipse, Nakaimo, H Dekinai, Arcana Famiglia
All of which are complete trash. Moyashimon 2 probably goes in this tier as well, but I didnt give it more than 1 episode because it bored me so much.

Arrietty / Kari-gurashi no Arietti (2010)

Arrietty is the studio ghibli take on 'the borrowers' concept, an american film was made in the late 90's as a comedy with John Goodman or some fatguy i believe, unsurprisingly, the Studio ghibli version is better.




The story is fairly simple and follows the life of young borrower Arrietty as she does her first borrowing from the house she lives in, however things dont go quite as planned and... thats how the movie plays out.



It runs fairly short for a modern film at only 90 minutes and it feels it, I personally have no problems with this as theres nothing worse than watching a film that outstays its welcome, The borrowers Arrietty does what it comes to do, and then disappears much like the borrowers themselves. Its a great film, but falls short of other Studio ghibli greats like Porco Rosso or Laputa. The film also does a fantastic job of conveying the scale of the borrowers, the sound is particularly well done.
Im going to stop now before I start sounding like a film student.

I may consider watching Usagi Drop and the idolm@ster anime but the rest of it all honestly looks/sounds terrible. bit of a disappointment after there being so many good series on now (spring season). Ah well, maybe i'll watch some older series like Geass/Darker than black

Getting mad at anime. (Baka and Test)

So. I usually find anime to watch by sifting through genres, or going by recomendations from other people so on and so on.
Somehow, i stumbled upon 'Baka and Test: Summon the beasts' , a show which has (i suppose) an interesting premise....

"Fumizuki Academy is a school that strictly stratifies students, and the comforts of their classrooms, by test scores. The lowest ranked class, Class F, lead by Yoshii Akihisa, the idiot amongst idiots (and the series titular Baka) rallies to use experimental fantasy summoned monsters to battle the higher ranked classes for school supremacy.

With the power of idiots and one of the smartest students in Fumizuki Academy, Himeji Mizuki, a girl who was sick on the day of the placement test and ended up in Class F together with Yoshii, one by one the other classes begin to fall before them."

The show is tagged as (amongst other shit) Seinen Comedy - or comedy for 18-25 year olds.
What the show actually is, is an attempt at comedy similar to.... I dont even know... I cant even think of anything else which attempts to do comedy at such a poor level.
The plot is shit, the action is shit, the comedy is non-existant , the romance is sort of there but fucking christ you couldnt make a more stereotypical highschool romance love polygon than this shit...

I can honestly say this is the worst anime ive ever seen (of which ive seen about 150).
I can also honestly say I havent been so mad at a piece of digital media since the whole Final Fantasy XI incident and actually, im probably more mad at this because i spent more time on it, the reviews and comments say it gets better as you go but jesus fucking christ im not waiting around to find out. 3.75 episodes was enough for me to realise this is a complete shitpiece.

tldr; avoid this shit at all costs.

Deadman Wonderland (Spring Anime 2011)

Wasn't really looking forward to this much, it sounded okay on paper but was just kind of 'okay sure whatever', didnt help that AniDB has it marked as 'Shounen' (boys).

A Brief overview of the plot given in Episode 1 is that the kid below is just chilling in his class, hanging with his fwens (maybe it was a friday, who knows) , when all of a sudden some guy in a red cloak floats outside his 3rd floor classroom and basically murders the entire class except from him. The murderer then does a wesker and implants this red gem thing into the kids chest (KONAMI CAPCOM WILL SUE).
The kid is basically the prime suspect for the murders, some evidence is planted against him, and he is sent to death row in Deadman Wonderland - Basically a prison/themepark , depending on which side of the gate you are, the prisoners have to survive and win games to get candy (which they die without). And thats about it for ep1, oh yeah he gets some sort of power from the gem, of course.

Overall, seems like an interesting anime, pretty dark and gritty at times which i quite like, good soundtrack from the sounds of it and it'll be interesting to see how it progresses.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Finally finished this 64 episode beast the other day (after starting it somewhere around new years), the first half of the series doesnt really give you much incentive to keep watching and as a result I almost actually dropped it 1/3 through, but I stuck with it because it has like.. the highest rating on AniDB at the moment (9.4 with 2k+ votes)

Turns out they were right, the story picks up somewhat half way through, and then the last quarter of the series was essentially a clusterfuck of action scenes loosely strung together by a plot with more twists than your average DNA molecule.

The series reminded me alot of an old Arnold Schwarzenigger film, first 3/4 of the film is buildup, setting the story, introducing the characters, and lots of little action scenes, and then the final quarter is all out action - Difference here being the average action film is 90 minutes, equating to about 15-20 minutes of finale action, the action quarter in FMA:B Lasts around 13 episodes

This is pretty reflected in the average episode votes...



Anywho, what im basically trying to say is, The series was really fucking good. Its a memorable story with a huge cast of likable and distinct characters, the art was fancy and the ending was satisfying (unlike the end of the 'original' Full Metal Alchemist series). If you saw the old series, this is a fun trip back to revisit old characters, If you didnt see the old series, this will probably be a nice treat into an interesting universe of alchemy.

Nichijou TV (Spring Anime 2011)

So episode 2 of Nichijou came out today, and its fucking fantastic.
I havent laughed so hard at an anime in a while, its bizarre humour is pretty refreshing amongst all the standard moeblob school comedy bullshit that is every other show nowadays.

Toriko Preview

OniiKoto and Dragon Crisis

both finished yesterday/today , and both are varying levels of terrible.
I dont actually know why i stuck around to watch both of them through til the end.

Dragon crisis : 5/10 - Bad plot, characters, inconclusive ending

I dont like my big brother at all : 6/10 - Bad plot (but then its at least a comedy), annoying characters, another inconclusive ending

Alot of the other spring series will be ending over the next 2 weeks as well, but none will be as bad as Dragon Crisis (oniikoto wasnt actually THAT bad, just not good)

Early winter 2010 had a ridiculous amount of good anime series airing, to the point where every day there would be something to watch...
So what did i end up watching?

(This list goes from the stuff i enjoyed MOST TO the stuff i enjoyed LEAST)

Panty and stocking with garterbelt

So anyone on vent probably knows what this is, fucking amazing anime. While the show is seriously lacking in plot or sensibility, it makes up for it with comedy, swearing and a fucking unbelieveable soundtrack.
Im pretty sure ive already linked a FLY AWAY NOW FLY AWAY NOW video on this blog somewhere...
I wont really even try to summarise the plot or anything, just go and watch it, if you have the same sort of humor as me you will love it.
Oh also, each bad guy has a live action explosion sequence when they die.
10/10 : mostly for just being very original, having some awesome fight scenes and just being hilarious. GOD MY OHHHH~~~~

Soredemo Machi wa mawatte iru (And so the city keeps turning)

Sort of a slice of life anime about a ditsy girl working as a maid, its very character driven and pretty funny. Recommend a watch if you're looking for a lighthearted character driven comedy. It also has a really catchy ending theme song...
9/10 : I really liked the characters and the comedy

Ika Musume (Squid Girl)

Girl is a squid. Girl tries to invade land. Girl ends up working in a cafe.
Pretty quirky and cute comedy de geso.
9/10 : Shes a fucking squid de geso.

The world only god knows

Dating sim expert gets paired with a demon and is tasked with capturing the hearts of real girls in order to release their inner demons or some bizarre shit. Its like a light romantic comedy but with him trying to win over different girls each time, pretty enjoyable and a second season has already been announced...
Also. Elsie is a super adorable sidekick
8/10 : Its something a little bit different and its just a nice short watch.

Psychic detective Yakumo

Guy can see ghosts with his left eye, helps some detective with some murder / spiritual possession cases and the story sort of goes abit crazy from there with some of the cases.... Its a pretty decent show although it feels like they try to make it go abit death note with the mind games and shit at the end (it was a little poorly done and predictable sadly), its a decent watch though.

My Little Sister Can`t Be This Cute

Oh my fucking god this series almost pushed me OVER THA FUCKIN LINEEEEEE~
When the main premise is the interaction between a brother and sister, why would you make the sister the most hatable, irritating, bitchy (and not in an anarchy panty bitchy angel style bitchy), selfish, annoying, brattish, spoilt, irritating fucking ARGRHGHGH.
Its not often you really want a character in an anime to suddenly be diagnosed with some sort of terminal disease but this girl does it.
All of the other characters are actually pretty nice, and this sort of redeems the series but fucking hell that sister....

I also got to fnially see The disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (2010) which was actually released in Japanese cinemas early 2010, but only recently came out on blu-ray to download (i didnt feel like going for the eyecancer camrip version).
Im pretty glad i held out waiting for it to come on blu-ray, as I was initially sort of hesitant after the fucking horrific Season2 endless 8 bullshit.
The film (subbed by Mazui) is in glorious 1080p and well translated, it runs a little long at 2hrs 40, but the film definitely doesnt feel that long, although the story seems to progress VERY slowly, the film never really seems to drag on and the plotline is pretty good, and appropriate for the haruhi series, its a good watch and totally redeems season 2.
